2009 – A year in Search

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Today is the last day of 2009, and so fitting, I feel, to write a post about what 2009 had to offer us in the world of Search.

Search made some great strides in 2009, and we saw alot of changes to the way that search engines deliver results to users.  The recent introduction of real time search (providing results from Social Media Channels such as Twitter) was probably the most significant change this year.

Search also became very personalised in 2009, with the introduction of Google Wiki.  This allows users to manage their own results (through promotion of or removal of) when they are signed into their Google account.  At the time this was seen as a potential problem for SEO consultants, but in fairness I think it has done more to enhance the experience of search for the end user.

Of course, its difficult to talk about 2009 and not mention the introduction of BING.   Even if you still haven’t been convinced or are not a big fan Bing seems to have had a clear influence on Google.  If it wasn’t for Bing we may have been still waiting for real time search results for example.

It’s also hard to forget the Google broke its own search results (well, here in the UK anyway) during 2009.  Thousands of UK searchers were being delivered US relative results.  I know that this caused many SEO’s problems for a short period of time.

We have also seen the introduction of and extreme growth of many Search and Social Media Tools .  Twitter is probably the cherry on the icing on the cake, as millions of internet users and businesses ‘Tweet’ to make themselves heard.  Google Wave, a  personal communication and collaboration tool, was also introduced through ‘invitation’ to around 100,000 users.  We think that Wave will make great strides in the first quarter of 2010.

I am sure 2010 will be a very interesting year for search.

Happy New Year!

Twitter to release premium accounts for business?

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

There is a rumour on the rounds that Twitter will be releasing premium ‘paid for’ accounts for businesses before the end of 2009.  The primary intention for these accounts would be marketing, promotions, customer relations, advertising etc.   The benefit over standard Twitter accounts is that you would be able to view statistics and analytics on your tweets.

However, word on the street is that there wont be a great amount of interests in these accounts, especially for smaller businesses.  Some smaller businesses on Twitter benefit from the word of mouth and personal touch that a standard Twitter account offers as a marketing tool.

So, when the Premium accounts are made public, would you register for one?  If you do, make sure that, with any paid marketing or Search Engine Optimisation stategy that you have clearly defined goals in place so that you know what you want to achieve from your investment.

Twitter is severely misunderstood!

Monday, June 15th, 2009

I get alot of questions at the moment about Twitter and how it can help people to promote their business.  I’m finding that the main problem is that many see it as just ‘another’ social media site and as such seems to have a damanged reputation (without having been tried & tested)  based on peoples views of Facebook and My Space.

First of all – let me tell you that Twitter should be an essential part to every one’s online marketing campaign.  If you haven’t yet got a Twitter account – sign up right now!

So what is Twitter?

Basically, Twitter is a micro-blogging site which allows people to easily write very short (140 characters) posts, visible to people who are ‘following’ them.   You can view our Twitter feed here.

Why do people use Twitter?

Twitter is a tool that allows you to build a network of ‘followers’ (contacts) to share information.  This information can be absolutely anything you want.  You can tell people what you are doing (although I wouldnt recommend telling people ‘I am typing on Twitter’!), you can promote your online services, alert people of interesting blog posts and news articles and much more!  Generally people ‘follow’ you on Twitter because you have something in common, so you are ‘tweeting’ to a targeted audience.  The more your Twitter network grows, the wider the audience for your ‘tweets’

A simple and easy place to start is to create a simple feed on Twitter and publish all or at least some of the most interesting new pages on it.  Note that the URLs will be shorterned to stay in the 140 character limit!

Twitter should become a place of interaction between you and your clients (and potential clients).  It was recently reported that Dell made $3m dollars by providing discount codes for their followers to purchase computers and laptops online.  With this is mind can you really afford not to spend a few minutes a day ‘tweeting’?

Would it be beneficial for Google to purchase Twitter?

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

There has been a lot of recent talk about Google aquiring Twitter due to the enormous amount of interest and activity the social networking site has generated over the last few months.

Would it be beneficial for Google to purchase such a network?

It’s an ideal channel for product marketing, viral marketing and such what and could fit in well with Googles strategy.

The recent news about Ashton Kutcher breaking 1 million followers is said to be a milestone in the use of social networking sites, and one that has raised a few eyebrows and opened a few eyes.

This story is of interest to SEO’s as Google seemingly see’s great value in social networks when it comes to Search Engine results.

Does Twitter help with SEO?

Just a quick one for now……

The Twitter phenomenon seems to be ploughing ahead at full steam right now, with record numbers of tweets being recorded.  But does it help with your Search Engine Optimisation campaign?

Directly, no, I don’t believe  it does it terms of the actual optimisation of your site, but it does hold alot of value in terms of marketing and increasing the awareness of your site if you are prepared to invest the time to use it well.

I do know that since I started using Twitter that visits to this blog have increased which can only be a good thing.

Twitter Growth Explodes in a year

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

New figures just out show that the number of people using Twitter in the UK has gone through the roof over the last year.

It’s not just the public using the site either – celebrities like Barack Obama, Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand have all jumped on the bandwagon.

Market research company Nielsen Online says Twitter grew by 1,689% from February 2008 to February 2009.

That means there are now more than 1.78 million people signed on.

This time last year the social networking site only had 100,000 members.

The same figures, however, show Facebook is still far and away the leading social networking site, with 17.8 million users and steady, strong growth of 114%.

Social Networking sites are still a great way of getting your products and services out in the public domain.
